Destiny 2 lore: Cayde-6 Family

Character lore: Cayde-6

It is said that the Awoken were born in the Collapse, descended from those who tried to flee its wrath. Something happened to them out on the edge of the deep black, and they were forever changed.

Today many Awoken live in the distant Reef, aloof and mysterious. But others returned to Earth, where their descendants now fight for the City.

Earthborn Awoken who venture out to the Reef, hoping to learn its secrets, find no special welcome from the reclusive Queen.

Welcome back guardians, today we are continuing with some lore about Cayde-6, specifically his family. If you missed my previous Cayde-6 video I will leave a link below, however essentially, we found a page from Cayde’s journal that revealed that he had partner, whom he had a child with named, or at least nicknamed Ace. I spoke about his previous life as a human, the events leading to him becoming an exo, his constant struggle to reclaim his memory and of course the symbolism of the Ace of Spades.

Following the weekly reset, another page from Cayde’s journal was released and this one involves the Awoken, hence the introduction quote. Thanks to anonpig for the heads up. Whilst the journal entry is quite small, we can gather a lot of lore from it and also use it as a spring board to discuss the awoken in greater detail. The other exciting thing is that we can speculate that each week we will get a new journal entry for a different location, the journal entries are unlocked by finding Cayde’s treasure stashes and Cayde’s stashes rotate locations each week, so I assume there will at least be one journal entry per planet/moon. Really exciting.

I will be livestreaming as soon as this video goes live, and also a massive thank you to all the patreons. Your support has been so amazing, the artist Gammatrap has been able to dedicate even more time to artwork for the channel and is currently working on an Osiris video for everyone to enjoy.

This is myelin games and I hope you enjoy this latest Destiny 2 Lore episode.

Firstly, can I say, make sure you do the Cayde’s treasure hunts, all you need to is purchase the treasure maps from him in the social space and then find the chests on the specified planet, if you are lucky you can get legendary items from the chests, not only that but you can actually get faction items, I got a New Monarchy scout and a Future War Cult auto rifle!

Ok, lets get into what the next journal piece actually says.

– Here’s the skinny, Ace, never trust the Awoken. The Reef type. The ones back Earth, they’re ok. But if you ever find yourself washed up in the Reef, keep your distance. They play by a whole other set of rules, like they want to be untrusted. And whatever you do, do not stare into their eyes-

– From the journals of Cayde-6

So, firstly, the Awoken were created during the Collapse. The Awoken grimoire card reads,

It is said that the Awoken were born in the Collapse, descended from those who tried to flee its wrath. Something happened to them out on the edge of the deep black, and they were forever changed.

So, does this mean that Ace survived the Collapse? The fact that Cayde is referring to the Awoken, means that he wrote this journal entry post collapse and the fact that this journal entry is directed at Ace also implies that Ace survived the Collapse… unless Cayde is writing his journal to Ace, even though Ace died, which makes this entry a 100 times more sad, Cayde may be using his journal as a therapeutic device to reflect on his previous life, to remember his previous life, so he writes his journal entries like he is still talking with this child.

So, here are the three possibilities at the moment:

  1. Ace survived the Collapse but would surely be dead by now as there has been centuries since the collapse
  2. Ace died in the Collapse however also became a Guardian like Cayde, hence Cayde is still writing journal entries about him.
  3. Ace died in the Collapse and Cayde is still writing entries about his child as a way of coping with the loss.

Now, lets decrypt a couple more aspects of this journal paragraph. Cayde speaks about Awoken at the Reef and Awoken on Earth. The Awoken actually have quite a division between Reefborn Awoken and Earthborn Awoken. Reefborn Awoken are those original awoken born during the collapse in space and subsequent generations born in the Reef, and Earthborn Awoken are Awoken who abandoned the Reef heading to Earth and subsequent Awoken generations born on Earth.

Reefborn Awoken do not like Earthborn Awoken, however we do not really know why, however there is a sense of pride, secrecy and superiority involved with Reefborn awoken. This is emphasised by Prince Uldren, whose grimoire card reads,

“I will not sacrifice my birthright for the promise of security”

This implies that if Prince Uldren left the Reef for the safety of the Earth City, he would lose his birthright and be rejected from the Reefborn Awoken. The Awoken grimoire card further reinforces the hostility of the Reef to Earthborn awoken, it reads,

Earthborn Awoken who venture out to the Reef, hoping to learn its secrets, find no special welcome from the reclusive Queen.

The other interesting thing between reefborn and earthborn awoken are their abilities. Reefborn are not guardians, yet they have this tremendous power, well the Queen does at least and her Techeuns to a lesser extinct. For example, we see the Queen and some, not all, of her Techeuns summon the Harbingers, living weapons, to fight Oryx. I believe this is what Cayde is alluding to when he says to Ace, And whatever you do, do not stare into their eyes.

Variks perfectly describes the terrifying power of the Awoken, with reference to the eyes in the Skolas: Defeated grimoire card, Variks says this about Petra Venj

She stares into the gem with a distant Awoken eye. What does she see? Variks knows she has visions and he knows those visions haunt her, drive her. The Awoken are twinned to powers that terrify Variks. He’d dock himself again before he’d let the Queen’s witches near him, the witches who raised Petra.

The witches by the way are the tech-witches i.e. the Techeuns. Variks would rather lose his arms again then go anyway near the Awoken techeuns. Lastly, I wanted to mention the Ghost Fragment: Queen’s brother grimoire card which once again emphasises the Awoken’s power and draws attention to their eyes. In this card Prince Uldren approaches the Queen to inform her on news regarding the Black Garden, the card reads,

She was alone with her Fallen guards, sitting before a window into infinity. Her eyes did not leave the universe; but sensing her brother she said “Yes. What is it?”

Cayde-6 understands that the Awoken possess terrifying power and so you should heed the advice Cayde gave his child, never stare a reefborn awoken in the eyes.

That concludes this latest destiny 2 lore episode, I eagerly await the next page from Cayde’s journal next reset, thank you for listening and if you would like to support the channel leave the word “Reefborn” to recognise Cayde’s cautionary words to his son. As usual it has been a pleasure, this is myelin games. Peace.
