Destiny 2 Lore: The Traveler/shard is the only source of Light?

Sources of Light

Welcome back guardians. I have more of a lore news video today where I wanted to talk about some of the information currently on the Destiny 2 website which relates to the new locations in Destiny 2. Specifically I wanted to mention the Travelers shard in the European Dead Zone, Titan and IO. The information on the website has some pretty significant lore implications.

Before we start, I have a couple of other announcements, I have made the final decision upon the voice actor for the Anan comic book, I will make a video announcing the winner on Wednesday.

Also, please check out Log Power slaves parody video on Titans in Destiny 2, Log is one of my co-hosts from the Destiny Down Under podcast and all round top bloke. I will put his video in the first link of the description.

Lastly, as usual, I will live over on twitch when this video is uploaded youtube. I have also added some more streams to the schedule. Destiny streams are at night for the US and paragon streams are in the morning.

This is myelin games and I hope you enjoy this latest destiny lore episode.

Firstly, I became away of the information on the Destiny 2 website after reading a reddit post by Gaelhelemar, a link to the post is below. Essentially, the description of the European Dead Zone confirms that the Traveler is the source of Guardian’s power, which we did know, however it makes it almost seem like the Traveler and/or shard of the Traveler is the only source of Light. The website reads,

European Dead Zone was ground-zero for a cataclysmic event that left a massive shard of The Traveler — the source of every Guardian’s power and immortality — embedded in the vast landscape.

For years, only wild vegetation and the remains of an abandoned city were evidence of our forgotten past. Now, the Red Legion are using the European Dead Zone as a staging ground for their war machine.

I have always been under the impression that the Traveler was the main source of Light but not the only source of Light. The main reason for this is the Taken King subclass quest lines that had has unlock abilities from different areas, we harnessed the Void for the Nightstalker from the Black Garden, we harness solar energy for the Sunbreaker from the Forge on Mercury and we harnessed Arc energy from the Arc storms on Mars for the Stormcaller.

The quest lines for these subclasses are very suggestive that we use other sources of Light, not just Light from the Traveler. For example, the Nightstalker, seems like we draw power directly from the Void, rather than the Traveler. The Nightstalker Trail reads,

I wasn’t sure you could connect with the void. Its always a challenge. I should have known better. We may have lost Tevis, but your strength means the vanguard still owns the night. Come on back.”- Cayde -6

And in game the quest reads,

“Alive, or the other thing, we need to find Tevis. There aren’t a lot of Nightstalkers in the field. We cant afford to lose his connection with the Void to the Vex. Go get him.” Cayde-6

And the Nightstalker grimoire card reads,

“Draw from the Void. Light the way.”

As you can see, most of the emphasis is on drawing power from the Void itself. We see a similar theme with the Sunbreakers, when we unlock the Sunbreaker ability we go to the Forge on Mercury, where the Third embyreal magistrate of the Sunbreakers, Ouros says,

Fire born of man… Fire of the Light. Ask yourself, what power do you seek from the forge, Guardian?

We then proceed to pull the Hammer of Sol from the Forge. Once again, the implication is that we are harnessing Light from different sources, in this case Solar energy from the Forge. The StormCaller is no different, have a listen to the in-game lore that is told during the Stormcaller mission, it reads,

The Vex are practical, focused. They store energy in all its forms. The Conductive Mind contains a powerful Arc source. Seek out this construct, destroy it, and claim the source as your own”- Ikora

The Vex of Mars seek out Arc energy storms that race across the planet. Find a storm. Meditate. Observe the lighting’s flow. And master it.”- Ikora

Arc is inside all life. You must feel it take hold, let it flow through, but not consume you. You are a conduit. Between sky and earth. Electricity and matter. Life and death.

IN this case, Stormcallers are drawing from Arc Storms and this mission also provides addition information that Arc is inside all life. The Taken King subclasses for me established that the Traveler was not the only source of Light, that you could harness Light from different sources to use it as a weapon. It also provided justification to why enemy races can have energy shields and weapons, they did not access that power from the Traveler, they gained it from other sources, with the exception of the Fallen, the Fallen may have some remanent energy left over from their time aligned with the Traveler.

Not only that, but harnessing the light from different sources also provided a nice justification for creating different light manipulation techniques; the Stormcallers is a great example, the way that a Stormcaller manipulates the light is very much linked to the Light source, i.e. Arc storms.

Now.. the Description of the European Dead Zone, seems to contradict this, and seems to imply that only the Traveler, and to a lesser extent shards of the Traveler provide Light and the only source of Guardian powers. Have another listen,

European Dead Zone was ground-zero for a cataclysmic event that left a massive shard of The Traveler — the source of every Guardian’s power and immortality — embedded in the vast landscape.

This one paragraph, really makes me question whether the Traveler, and any shards are in-fact the only source of Light. Considering, that Bungie is starting over with the definition of the Darkness, I would not be surprised if they are going to try and better define what the Light is and where it comes from, and specifically how guardians harness the light as weapon.

Personally, I think this paragraph confirms my previous theory, that is, that we will regain our powers from this traveler’s shard, which is why the shard is surrounded by Void, Arc and solar light. BUT What do you think, do you think Bungie is trying to better define the Light and that D2 the Traveler/shard will be the only sources of Light?

Now, before finishing the video I wanted to also read the paragraphs for Titan and IO, because they are also really interesting.

The great monuments of mankind’s utopian Golden Age now lie toppled or half submerged within the rolling ocean that blankets the entire surface of Titan.

All that remains is a flotilla of construction barges and a lone human habitat that serves as the perfect hiding place for some of humanity’s scattered forces – and something far more sinister below.

What… something sinister below… I instantly think of Worm Gods, this scenario is so similar to the Planet the Fundament, this ocean-like planet, where the Worm Gods were trapped below and Oryx and his sisters dive below the surface to find the Worm Gods. If we see the Worm Gods, I am going to freak out.

IO also has a really interesting description. It reads,

IO was the last place visited by the Traveler, and the site of great interest to both humanity and the timeless Vex machines. The Red Legion, too, now seek to unravel the secrets and power of this place, gouging at the surface,  seeking to uncover new sources of power to aid in their quest to dominate our worlds. It is up to you to protect this place, and to preserve its great legacy.

Is this new source of power related to the Traveler, similar to the Shard of the Traveler, or is it something completely different. At this point, we will have to wait and see.

That will conclude this latest destiny Lore episode. If you would like to support the channel, leave the word “below”, to represent whatever is hiding below the surface of Titan. As usual it has been a pleasure, this is myelin games. Peace.
