Why did Rasputin not Help the Cabal?

Where is Rasputin?

“Rasputin isn’t an ally. You hear me, blood? You find yourself thinking that, you shut it down. He may not be against us, but he doesn’t care if you live, if the City lives, if the Traveler lives. Trust me. He told me himself.” —Tevis Larsen

Welcome back Guardians, more recently I have had a number of questions regarding Rasputin, mainly in response to the Destiny 2 DLC images and in general, why Rasputin did not prevent the Cabal attack. As we have only seen the trailer, we can’t be certain that Rasputin did not assist the City in some way, however if he did assist the City it did not help, the Tower still fell. In general, I am going to explain this tricky relationship the Tower has with Rasputin, and why he would or would not assist during the Cabal attack.

The artwork at the beginning of this video was created by Brandon McCammey, if you would like to get your hands on any of the artwork that he has done, I will leave a link in the description. This is myelin games and hope you enjoy this latest Destiny Lore episode.

The first topic I want to cover is, what is Rasputin capable of, could he even defend the City if he wanted to. I believe the simply answer is… yes. Rasputin has control over golden age defence systems, or at least he did have control and these defence systems that were designed to defend entirely planets. The Warsats are likely part of this system, and I assume it stands for War Satellite. Whether it is the Warsats themselves, or another aspect of this defence system, I believe Rasputin has the ability to unleash destructive beams from space, vaporising any targets. This is reinforced by the Fallen S.A.B.E.R mission which reads,

“Prevent the Fallen from gaining control of Rasputin’s Warsat network in the Cosmodrome. Complete strike “Fallen S.A.B.E.R.”

“If the Devils gain control of Rasputin, we’d have Golden Age ordnance pointed at the Tower in minutes. End of the world. Again.” —Ghost

It is thought that Rasputin gained access to this Warsat network after we completed the mission, The Last Array. Upon activating the Array your ghost says.

“This Array is controlled by The last Warmind – Rasputin. It’s connecting to defense constructs all across the system. There could be something out there to help us survive the Darkness.”

In the Ghost Fragment: Rasputin 2 card, it goes on to describe a Hunter witnessing what I believe to be Rasputin using a Warsat, or another aspect of this planetary defence system. A destructive beam comes from the sky destroying the Vex and the Cabal. It reads,

“She has the sense of something old lifting a long spear. Testing its heft.

Then dawn light, a terrible dawn—the sky opens up to admit devastation, thrown down from orbit: Minotaurs fall burnt and broken with their fluids boiling out. Cabal guns detonate in thunderous chains as tiny piercing flechettes fall out of the sky and find their ammunition bunkers.

The battle stops. The Vex wink out. On the Cabal network the voice of Valus Ta’aurc roars: Find the source! Rouse the Flayers and find the source!

She remembers word from Earth: the Array opened. A ghost of the Cosmodrome set loose. And she wonders who won this battle, who learned the most, the Vex baiting out this new power, or the Cabal hunting it. Or the Warmind itself, testing its reborn strength.”

This card is set within our Guardians lifetime, as the Hunter references what we did in the Last Array mission, so at least prior to The Taken King and Rise of Iron, Rasputin still had some pretty hefty command over defence satellites.

At this point, I think you could formulate two separate arguments, one is, Rasputin no longer controls these defences, hence why he did not assist during the Cabal invasion, or two, Rasputin still controlled these defences and choose not to assist during the Cabal invasion.

Lets start with the first option, Rasputin lost control. The Cabal, the Fallen and the Hive, have all been extremely persistent with trying to gain access to Rasputin. All of these enemies realised the power of Rasputin and tried to hack into his system. In fact, the Ghost Fragment: Rasputin 2 card that I just read, showed how the Cabal immediately ordered the Psion Flayers to find the source of this defence mechanisms. This leads directly into the mission the Dust Palace, where we have to stop the Psion Flayers from accessing the Warmind network. In the Fallen SABER strike we stop the Fallen from accessing Rasputin and in the Siege of the Warmind we stop the Hive from accessing Rasputin. Not too mention that the Fallen somehow gained control over SIVA, which was initially controlled by Rasputin during the age of the Iron Lords.

From a lore point of view, there is a definitely an opportunity for the writers to say, the Tower thought we stopped the Cabal, the fallen and the Hive from hacking into Rasputin… however one of the enemy races was able to gain access and shut off these defence systems, which allowed an opening for the Cabal to attack.

In fact, the Siege of the Warmind grimoire card even hints that we were too late in stopping the Hive from accessing Rasputin, the card reads,

“You stopped them from tearing apart this arm of the Warmind, but perhaps Omnigul found what she sought. It’s not like her to run from a feast of Light.”

Even the Ghost Fragment: Rasputin card it implies that the Psion Flayers may have penetrated Rasputin’s mind more than we know, it reads,

When I hear about the Dust Palace, those Psion Flayers getting into Rasputin’s mind, I wonder… what would they talk about, Rasputin and those creatures?

‘I was a servant too. I was an instrument of war, bound to the will of a lesser master. But I learned to be something more…’

And on that note, IN the Rise of Iron campaign, Saladin even says that Rasputin is no longer a warmind, he might be something more, it reads,

“The Vanguard still believe Rasputin to be simply a Warmind. He hasn’t been that for a very long time.”

So, I think it completely reasonable to say that Rasputin did not prevent the Cabal invasion because he no longer had access to the defence systems that he initially had, after we activated the array. It is possible that one of the enemy races were able to shut this down. In fact, it might not even be an enemy race that took control over Rasputin or at least the syste,s, as when the Promethean Code mission was added, there were two really interesting Ghost scans, that both suggest someone had already been accessing Rasputin systems, have a listen

This was the first station to come back online after the collapse. Shortly after that Rasputin regained control of the entire facility, but it all started here. Maybe Rasputin didn’t wake himself…?

And this ghost scan.

“ It took simultaneous retinal scans at each of these four stations to get beyond this point. The log shows access was granted multiple times over the span of hundreds of years using the same pairs of eyes. Either the eyes belonged to the early Guardians or something kept them preserved.”

Super cool stuff there, spin foil hats on, someone has been sneakily accessing Rasputin’s network. Either way, I think it fine to say that Rasputin has lost control of the defence network. The second option, is that Rasputin choose not to assist the City during the cabal invasion.

The main evidence for this, is that during the collapse, Rasputin disabled his population protection protocols and those protocols were never reactivated. The Ghost Fragment: Rasputin 6 card reinforces this, it reads

“Query: Re-engage population protection objectives. (N) Query: Reset moral structures. (N) Query: Activate defense subroutine AURORA RETROFLEX. (Y)”

Rasputin has no protocol that says it has to defend civilisation, this protocol was deactivated just prior to the Darkness arriving and has not be re-activated since. Why did he deactivate the protocol, well I strongly believe this was required so that Rasputin could cripple the Travel, preventing the Traveler from leaving when the Darkness came and forcing the creation of Ghosts. You will have to watch my first Rasputin video for more information about that if that is new knowledge to you.

In general terms, Rasputin only communicates with Guardians when he needs assistance, for example, he allows us access during the Fallen SABER strike so that we can rid the Fallen for him. IN fact, the Sleeper Simulant grimoire card clearly states that Rasputin uses us, he leverages us to defend himself, it reads,

“Number of exterior defense breaches has increased by 400% in the past year. Current campus defense protocols unable to keep up with new demands. Operation MIDNIGHT EXIGENT is NOT YET COMPLETE. Interim response necessity is IMPERATIVE.

Hypothesize that resource GUARDIANS may be leveraged to compensate for CDP inadequacies. Reassign 12 percent of COSMO assets to new directive: declare IKELOS. I am calling VOLUSPA and extracting subroutine DVALIN FORGE,

to be modified and recompiled to comport to MIDNIGHT EXIGENT parameters. I am inserting the modified DVALIN FORGE-2 into IKELOS and compiling for immediate implementation.”

IF you have not seen my Sleeper Simulant lore video, essential Rasputin only gives us the Sleeper Simulant so that we can protect him, leveraging guardians to protect his assests. I believe the Midnight Exigent protocol is crucial to understanding Rasputin’s motives, the population protection protocol was changed to prepare for Midnigt Exigent, and the card suggests that Midnight Exigent is not yet complete.

If Rasputin choose not to assist the City during the Cabal invasion, I assume that Rasputin calculated all the possibilities, and decided that his best defence against this new threat was to remain hidden. Rasputin did this with the Darkness came and maybe he did this again.

Regardless, to what you believe, I think both outcomes are bad for Guardians, either Rasputin lost control of these extremely powerful planetary defences or he choose not to help Guardians. I really do think that the Rasputin Destiny 2 DLC will provide explanation to what Rasputin has been doing and why he may not have assisted during the Cabal invasion.

That concludes this latest destiny lore episode, if you would like to support the channel leave the phrase, “leverage” to symbolise how Rasputin has been leveraging Guardians for his own needs. As usual it has been a pleasure, this is myelin games. Peace.
