  • Bungie Forums, 11th February 2013.

Welcome back Guardians, what you just heard was a forum post by a Bungie employee calling themselves Apha Lupi a year before Destiny was released and this will feature in today’s video. On a side note, I do pronounce it Alpha Lupi, which I will stick with for this video, however I do know a lot of people pronounce it as Alpha Lu-pie.

We are also going to look at who Alpha Lupi is, with further speculation right at the end and three hidden messages in the Dreams of Alpha Lupi, which involve, the Traveler, Rasputin and possibly even the Iron Lords and Iron Wolves.

There is no artwork this week however stay tuned because the Xur salted popcorn final colour final artwork is almost complete. In fact, by the time this is posted, I may even have it. Also feel free to keep up to date with my work on Twitter and join the weekly Destiny lore live streams on Twitch. This is myelin games and I hope you enjoy this latest Destiny Lore episode.

Let’s begin with Dreams of Alpha Lupi. In general, the Dreams of Alpha Lupi detail the history of the Traveler, from terraforming planets, the arrival of the Darkness and even the collapse. Whilst the Grimorie cards are about the Traveler, I don’t believe that Alpha Lupi is the Traveler.

I believe Alpha Lupi is somehow connected to the Traveler and is having visions of the Traveler’s past. For example, take Ghost Fragment: The Traveler grimoire card which reads,

“Dreams of Alpha Lupi. You have lived as invisibly as possible, flicking from solar system to solar system, making grand plans, overseeing the culturing of civilizations, before leaving in a blink. But you have no recollection of ever wanting worship or even thanks from those blessed by you. But memory is heavy now. It feels like lead and neutronium and electroweak matter fashioned into a moon-sized ball that you must carry as you move. Now, your flight is rapid, your vast mind infected with such dread and toxic doubt that you find yourself afraid of the simple act of thought. And it is your children you must turn to now, in time of need.”

Without doubt this card is about the Traveler but is written from the perspective of someone narrating the Traveler’s history. If true and Alpha Lupi is an actual character who has visions/dreams of the Traveler’s past, it would have to be someone deeply connected with the Traveler. The most obvious choice would be the Speaker. The Speaker has a mysterious connection with the Traveler, so it would make sense that he has dreams/visions of the Traveler in an effort to uncover the past. Alpha Lupi can also be translated to the Alpha Wolf, Lupi referring to a constellation known as “The Wolf”. Consequently, you may argue that the Speaker is the leader of this Wolf Pack. This may also explain why the Crest of Alpha Lupi is represented by a wolf, however, I will explain the Crest of Alpha Lupi later in the video, as it could have another meaning.

Alternatively, you may also argue that Alpha Lupi translates to the brightest star in the southern constellation of Lupus, hence Alpha Lupi is the Traveler, the Traveler is most representative of a star. Also, when it says “Dreams of Alpha Lupi”, you could interpret this as, it is not Alpha Lupi’s dreams, it is someone dreaming of Alpha Lupi i.e. it could be the Speaker dreaming of the Traveler.

I don’t think it really matters at this stage, who you think Alpha Lupi is, however I do think that the Alpha Lupi cards contain some very big plot twists in Destiny’s future. The first is about why the Traveler came to Earth, the second is about Rasputin and the third is about the Iron Lords or the Iron wolves.

The first potential secrete of the Traveler’s past, is that the Traveler was pushed or lured to our solar system intentionally by someone or something. Previously, we have believed that the Traveler was just fleeing the Darkness/Oryx and by chance entered our system, just like all the other previous civilisations the Traveler had visited.

The evidence that someone wanted the Traveler to come to our specific system is relatively convoluted so I will summarise. There are currently 11 grimoire cards that detail the “Dreams of Alpha Lupi” however what you may not know, is that 7 of the 11 grimoire cards were released a year before Destiny was even playable.

On the 11th of February 2013, an account named Alpha Lupi started posting on the Bungie Forums. The account was assumed to be controlled by Bungie as part of a marketing campaign. Its avatar was a stylised version of the symbol for “Fourier Transform pairs” which was a clue necessary to solve the future online puzzles posted by Alpha Lupi.

The Alpha Lupi account posted a link to alphalupi.bungie.net which contained a series of convoluted puzzles. I will leave a link to the Destiny Wiki page which details how all of these puzzles were solved http://destiny.wikia.com/wiki/Alpha_Lupi

However, after solving all of the puzzles the audience was presented with a mosaic of seven verses from the Dreams of Alpha Lupi. The verses in the mosaic are exactly the same as the verses in the Grimoire cards, these include, Ghost Fragment: Moon, Ghost Fragment: Mars, Ghost Fragment: Mercury, Ghost Fragment: Jupiter, Ghost Fragment: Venus, Ghost Fragment: Saturn, Ghost Fragment: Earth.

However, there was one exception, all verses from the online puzzles read exactly the same as the grimoire cards except one, Ghost Fragment: Saturn. The puzzle verses online, reads slightly differently and contains some additional lines than the grimoire cards. I have highlighted the additional lines not scene in the grimoire card in red. It reads,

“You have been pushed to this place, for a reason. A cold giant shows its night face to you. Distant moons slide past; icy little comets enslaved by a splendid master. The lightning bolts and high clouds are swept away, and then you burrow into a sea of liquid hydrogen that boils out of the long gash. You put yourself on the perfect trajectory, and for a fraction of an instant you allow yourself the luxury of confidence. Eyes that never close gaze everywhere and at everything. You see them in their hiding places. And they can see you, too.”

The removed line “You have been pushed to this place, for a reason” hints that the Traveler did not incidentally land in our solar system whilst fleeing the Darkness/Oryx, but someone intended the Traveler to end up here, whether that is Oryx, the Darkness, the worms or something else, someone pushed the Traveler to our system on purpose.

Interestingly, this idea that the Traveler was pushed into our solar system and not necessarily just fleeing the Darkness or Oryx is reinforced in the Ghost Fragment: The Traveler 2 grimoire card. This card is also a verse from Dreams of Alpha Lupi, however was not released with the 7 original Dreams in the online puzzles.

It reads,

“Dreams of Alpha Lupi. This has been such a long chase. This will be the place you will fight. Fight and win. But do you really know why you go where you go, and where this journey is taking you? The chase leads you where you need to be, you believe. Unless…you are being pushed.”

Who pushed the Traveler and why they pushed the Traveler to our system, we do not know, however I believe we are made to question whether this has been a part of someone’s grand plan all along. Maybe one of Oryx’s sisters predicted our system’s potential to defeat Oryx and lead the Traveler here.

Summarising, the first secret that the Dreams of Alpha Lupi holds is that the Traveler was pushed to our syste. Let’s now move onto what I believe is the second secret of the Dreams of Alpha Lupi; Rasputin stole something extremely important from the Traveler.

For this speculation to be true, you have to believe that Rasputin stopped the Traveler from fleeing Earth. So let me briefly recap the Ghost Fragment Rasputin 5 grimoire card.

It reads

“If available ISR and WARWATCH indicates imminent [O] departure >then [O] departure compromises human/neohuman survival and epoch strategy”… “Perform deniable authorization: full caedometric and noetic release. Prevent [O] departure by any means available.”

Obviously, I believe that the symbol used, the square brackets with a circle, represents the Traveler and that Rasputin prevented the Traveler from leaving forcing it to make guardians to defend itself and Earth.

If you believe this to be true, the Dreams of Alpha cards, specifically the Ghost Fragment: The Traveler 3 implies that Rasputin did something more than just stop the Traveler from leaving. It reads,

“Dreams of Alpha Lupi. The knife had a million blades. And you were giant, powerful and swift. But the knife pinned you. Cut your godly flesh away. Very little was left, you are sure, because you feel insignificant now. The hard slick heart of your soul: That is what remains. A body small as a river stone, and just as simple. You picture yourself as a piece of indigestible grit, a nameless nothing hiding among other nameless stones. Perhaps you glitter like a gem, yes. Pride makes you hope so. If only you could see yourself. But you have no eyes. Not the dimmest sense survives. What lives is memory, and what slim portion of these thoughts can you trust? The knife stole much more than your body.”

If this card is in fact speaking about Rasputin, pinning the Traveler down, it seems that Rasputin has taken something else from the Traveler,

“The Knife stole much more than your body.”

It even implies that Rasputin has tampered with the memory of the Traveler,

“What lives is memory, and what slim portion of these thoughts can you trust?”

Like always, there is always an alternative meaning, you may consider the reference to the Knife that pinned the Traveler, as Oryx/Darkness, not Rasputin. The Taken grimoire cards seem to reinforce this, as they almost always mention a knife transforming the beings.

Either way, I don’t think we truly understand the damage the Traveler has suffered during the collapse, we don’t understand why the Traveler has not healed and if anyone is controlling the Traveler.

Summarising again, Dreams of Alpha Lupi may indicate that the Traveler was pushed to our system by someone/something intentionally and Rasputin stole something from the Traveler and may have even tampered with it’s memory. Lastly, I want to talk about what everyone has probably been thinking, does this involve, the Iron Lords, Iron Wolves or even SIVA.

Is it just a coincidence that the Crest of Alpha Lupi is represented by a wolf which is strikingly similar to the wolves on the Iron Banner logo. Don’t forget that the Crest of Alpha Lupi also features on the Gjallarhorn. A weapon made from the armour of the fallen guardians during the Battle of Six Fronts. So we know that Alpha Lupi at least dates back to the Battle of Six Fronts, however it would need to date even further back to be associated with the Iron Lords. But also don’t forget the Iron gjallarwing which will be released with the rise of iron dlc.

This is highly speculative, however, The Crest of Alpha Lupi for Titans could be used as evidence to support the Iron Lords/Iron Wolves involvement with Alpha Lupi. It reads,

“Whoever survives our passing does so only by our consent.”

This is referring to a group of people, not one individual and also indicates that this group has passed. I can’t help but think this is a reference to the Iron Lords.

However, when we go and read the Hunter Crest of Alpha Lupi, it almost contradicts the Titan piece. It reads,

“You’ve heard every last tale of the wolf by now. None of them are true. You are the wolf.”

It is almost like, nope, they did not exist, just tales, you are the wolf.

Now, here is the kicker, maybe the Iron Lords/Iron Wolves discovered something greater than the Traveler. You all know that Warlocks do not have a Crest of Alpha Lupi, however, they do have a helmet with the same perks, called Light Beyond Nemesis. What you will also notice, is the wings on light beyond Nemesis are the same as the Wings on the Crest of Alpha Lupi. The item description reads,

“These are the wings of pratiya-samutpada, the truth of interconnectedness. The everywhere Light.”

Who or what is pratiya-samutpada? Which I apologise, I am sure I pronounce that incorrectly. It is a Buddhism term that translates to dependent origination or dependent arising, meaning that all things are dependent on something else,

“if this exists, that exists, if this cease to exist, that ceases to exist.”

In the context of Destiny, I interpret this as, there cannot light without dark, there cannot be the Sky without the Deep, there cannot be guardians without an enemy. Maybe, Alpha Lupi is not the Speaker, or the Traveler or anything to do with the Iron Wolves, but someone, something greater, greater than the light, greater than the Dark, something that has orchestrated everything thus far. A being that insists on a cosmic balance between light and dark. The Alpha Wolf. The brightest star in the sky.

Thank you watching this latest Destiny lore episode. If you would like to support the channel and cannot think of a comment, leave the words “Alpha Wolf” to symbolise the being that has controlled all the events so far in Destiny, keeping the balance between light and dark. Once again, it has been a pleasure, this is myelin games. Peace.
