The Hidden

The Awoken have played their part. This was all part of the plan. Guide them, my Hidden friend. It is all up to you now.

Welcome back guardians, today we will be discussing the Hidden, a group of secret Guardians that report to Vanguard Warlock Ikora Rey. We will discuss general function of the Hidden, the members of the Hidden and major influences of their actions.

It has been a busy week of Destiny Lore, links to “How do Guardians die?”, “Malahayati the warmind” and “Did any Iron Lords survive?” are in the description below. Tune in to Twitch for my Destiny Lore live streams which are 6pm-8pm every day with the exception of Saturday nights, if you are watching this video the moment it is released, I am streaming right now. Stay up to date on Twitter, especially if you want to help film destiny lore videos as I post when I filming. This is myelin games and I hope you enjoy this latest destiny lore episode.

Lets start with what we know about the Hidden. The Hidden are a group of Guardians that report to Ikora Rey, The Warlock Vanguard. They gather vital intelligence on enemies by operating behind enemy lines i.e. they are essentially Guardian spies. This is reinforced by the Crota’s Bane grimoire which reads

“Though her warnings of Crota and his power are often dismissed as madness, Eris returns to the shadows time and time again, operating as one of Ikora Rey’s Hidden—a clandestine group of Guardians tasked with silently infiltrating enemy strongholds and gathering vital intel for the Warlocks.”

Your Ghost also puts it quite bluntly saying,

“Ikora heads up a group called ‘the Hidden.’ They’re a ‘crack group of intelligence agents.’ In other words, spies. I’m just glad she’s on our side.” —Ghost

At first, I thought that the Hidden were all Warlocks, however, the grimoire cards and item descriptions do not necessarily say that. The Crota’s Bane grimoire card just said that the hidden are “ group of guardians” and that they gather “intel FOR warlocks”, not that they are Warlocks. Furthermore, Eris Morn is a member of the Hidden and she is a Hunter. In an interview a very long time ago, Luke smith confirmed Eris as a Hunter, see the gameinformer link below and skip to 6:24.

In addition, in the Eyes of Crota grimoire card, Toland is speaking with Eris and Omar and says,

“you’re hunters- hunt”

implying both Omar and Eris are Hunters. So in summary, to be an agent of the Hidden you do not have to be a Warlock, however the data intelligence you gather will be given to Ikora Rey and the Warlocks.

The next obvious question, is who else is a member of the Hidden. Many have speculated that other members of Eris Morn’s fireteam that initially tried to take on Crota were also members of the Hidden. This is mainly sparked by the Crota’s Bane class items, the Titan mark called “Mark of the Hidden” and the Warlock bond called “Curse of the Hidden”. The Titan mark reads,

“And with the lone strength of the Titan Vell Tarlowe, we felt invincible.” – Eris

and the Warlock bond reads

“I vowed to avenge them all, and this curse I will carry to my final death.” – Eriana-3.

This lead many to wonder whether both Vell Tarlowe and Eriana-3 were Hidden members. I do not think this is the case, and my main reason for thinking this, is because Eriana-3 is a member of the Praxic Warlocks. Whilst it would not be impossible for her to be a member of the Hidden and the Praxic warlocks, I think it unlikely, the Praxic warlocks are much more action focused rather than intelligence gathering and quote

“believe that people should not be concerned about the nature of the Darkness, and should instead focus on fighting it.”

Similarly, Vell Tarlowe was a member of the Titan Order, the Pilgrim Guard, and once again whilst not impossible that he belonged to both groups, I think it unlikely.

The other member of Eris Morn’s fireteam often associated with the Hidden is Toland, the shattered. As far, I am aware there are no cards that directly confirm Toland as a member of the Hidden, however you could argue that he operates very similarly to the Hidden, infiltrating enemy strongholds and gathering intelligence. For example, Ghost Fragment: The Hellmouth describes how Toland has entered the Hive netherworld after encountering the deathsinger Ir Yut and he begins to gather intelligence about this space. The card reads,

“Now I fly between green-black suns in the labyrinth beyond Crota’s god-star. This is the Overworld, the Sea of Screams, where the throne-universes of the great Hive fester in eternal majesty. I move among them. I map the shapes and connections of this world.”

Many would also speculate that Mara Sov’s dialogue in the opening scene of the Taken King references Toland, as her Hidden friend not Eris. Mara says,

“The Awoken have played their part. This was all part of the plan. Guide them, my Hidden friend. It is all up to you now.”

Whilst Toland may have been a great source of Hive intelligence, regardless if he was a Hidden member,  we are made to question his intentions, and whether he is still on the side of guardians and the tower, if he ever was that is. This is reinforced in the King’s Fall grimoire card, it reads,

“You fools! You disastrous, bumbling squanderers! It’s not right! Who now shall be First Navigator, Lord of Shapes, harrowed god, Taken King? Not you! You might have been Kings and Queens of the Deep! But you have toppled Oryx and you have not replaced him! There must be a strongest one. It is the architecture of these spaces. Why are you leaving?”

So to summarise the members of the Hidden, the only confirmed member I know of is, Eris Morn, with of course, Ikora Rey as the leader. So I guess, their name is well suited.

Despite their secretive nature, the most interesting aspect about the Hidden is they are intertwined into many aspects of Destiny’s storyline. If you remember when the Tower was infected with SIVA mites just prior to the release of the Rise of Iron, the Hidden were involved with sorting a cure. In fact, they worked, collaboratively with the Techeuns and the Owl Sector.

This is reinforced by Glory 2.1 which reads,

“The Hidden, the Witches, and our research corps may have had a breakthrough, using the information that Berriole has unearthed. We think we can neutralize this mite. The only problem is, we might kill Shun in the process.”

This would not be the first time that the Hidden were involved with solving major threats to the City. For example, they assisted with the formulating an assault on the Hive netherworld, as seen in the Regicide grimoire card, they understand some components of Taken power and in fact Eris Morn tries to map the Taken power in the The Taken Grimoire card, they provide information on the Vex as seen in the Undying mind grimoire card and they gather intelligence on the Cabal as seen in the opening missions of the Taken King.

As you can see, the Hidden are extremely powerful and mysterious group within the Destiny Universe relaying vital information to the Vanguard. Like our ghost says, we must be thankful that Ikora Rey and her hidden are on our side.

That concludes this latest Destiny Lore episode. If you would like to support this video but cannot think of a comment, the phrase, “my hidden friend”, to acknowledge that infamous sentence from Mara Sov and that the Hidden always remain as allies. This is Myelin Games and I hope you have enjoyed this latest destiny lore episode.
