Taniks Lives!

Character Lore

A Kell cut off his arms. He built himself new ones. Then he killed the Kell with them. Taniks once had no House, knelt before no banner, no allegience. A murderer, a mercenary and very good at what he does… But now he returns from death… Tanik’s crew has joined the splicers. They are using SIVA to reanimate his body and overtake his territory. Taniks the Scarred has become Taniks perfected.

Welcome back everyone. Today we are discussing the resurrection of Taniks in the new Shadow Thief strike mission released with the Dawning. If you have not played through this mission yet, this video may contain spoilers, so I suggest leaving now and returning later.

Beard Grizzly edited this video, which is greatly appreciated, because editing is not my strong point and the less time I spend editing, the more time I can spend researching and writing lore content. Please show Beard some love on youtube, he makes amazing destiny lore content, link to his channel will the very first link in the description.

You will also find links to my twitch channel, twitter and podcast details all in the description below. If you are watching this video within the first two hours of release, I will be livestreaming over on Twitch. The support on the livestreams have been amazing and thank you for that, we have been doing a Lore walkthrough, which is basically a fresh character completing the campaign missions again, but with me explaining the lore as it presents in game, which has been surprising fun.

This is myelin games and I hope you enjoy this latest destiny lore episode.

Before moving onto the new content, lets briefly cover who Taniks is. If you would like more detailed information, I have a whole video just on Taniks, so feel free to check that out, link in the description. However, to quickly summarize, two of the most notable things that Taniks has done is, one he broke Aksor  i.e. the Archon Priest, from the winter’s run strike mission out of the Prison of Elders and he also killed Andal Brask. Andal Brask, was one of Cayde-6’s best friends, and previous Hunter Vanguard before Cayde’s time.

Taniks is a mercenary, a hired gun to the Fallen houses and although not confirmed in the grimoire cards, I assume that a Fallen House hired him to assassinate Andal Brask, however that is speculation and it is possible that Taniks had other motives for killing Andal. On the topic of Fallen houses, Taniks is described as not having any allegiance to any Fallen House, operating like a true mercenary. This is best represented by the item description “Does not bow”, which reads,

“A Kell cut off his arms. He built himself new ones. Then he killed the Kell with them.”

Whilst this item does not specifically refer to Taniks, the only fallen with mechanical arms is Variks and Taniks, so most assume this item refers to Taniks. This item describes how Taniks was able to rebuild his own arms and then kill a Kell with them, at this point, after defeating the Kell, Taniks technically could have taken control over whatever Fallen house this was, however he did not. Taniks does not have any desire to lead a Fallen House, or show allegiance to any Fallen House and this is further reinforced by the Taniks the scarred grimoire card, which reads,

“His true ambitions rest in the challenge of the feats in front of him, and the rewards simply allow him to exist free of any Kell’s rule.”

This is when things become quite interesting, so far Taniks has demonstrated great power, breaking Aksor out of the prison of elders, defeating Andal Brask, killing a Kell (after making himself new mechanical arms) and not pledging allegiance to any Fallen house. On top of all of this, Taniks is very good with bioengineering and almost presents as a Splicer, Fallen Splicers are the body hackers and bioengineers that can combine SIVA tech with flesh. Have a listen the following descriptions of Taniks, descriptions that existed well before the knowledge of SIVA and Splicers.

The Cloak of Taniks says

“He of the endless troves of arms, and legs, and hearts and lungs, and…”

The Taniks, the Scarred grimoire card reads,

“It is believed by the Fallen that he is undying, a living huntsman whose physical self is joined with a mix of technologies, each pilfered from legendary treasure troves.”

And this, the Shadow Thief grimoire card reads,

“Most Fallen worship machines. It seems that Taniks, with his ritualistic surgeries and implants, wishes to be one.”

If you did not know that these cards were talking about Taniks, you could almost mistaken that these items describe a SIVA-fied machine god of the Devil Splicers. It is for this reason, that Taniks is the perfect candidate from a Lore point of view, to be revived by SIVA and remastered in the Shadow Thief strike. He is already such a hybrid of fallen and machine, I do not think that SIVA would have a difficult time reanimating him.

There are a lot of unknowns about this process and was is quite interesting is whether Taniks still controls his body, or whether SIVA and whoever is controlling SIVA, truly controls Taniks. How exactly SIVA revived him is unknown, but we do know from the last mission of Rise of Iron, that SIVA can revive Guardians to a certain degree.

The new Shadow Thief strike does add some information about Taniks’s resurrection and during the in-game dialogue it says,

“Variks has brought unsettling news, the devil splicers have used SIVA to resurrect an old foe, Taniks the Scarred has become Taniks perfected. Tanik’s crew has joined the splicers. They are using SIVA to reanimate his body and overtake his territory.”

It seems that those Fallen loyal to Taniks sought a partnership with the Devil Splicers in order to bring Taniks back to life. Taniks does not necessarily seem in control as it says,

“they are using SIVA to reanimate his body to overtake his territory.”

Almost like, the Devil Splicers just took advantage of Tanik’s death and revived his machine body to use his power and take control of his territory.

Regardless of why and how Taniks was revived, we are tasked with destroying taniks for a second time after he has been SIVA-fied and the mission ends with,

“You prevented SIVA from restarting Tanik’s mercenary operation. The Nanites continue to evolve their function. The Guardian will have plenty of opportunity to study SIVA, The devils are far from defeated.”

This strike mission in general leaves many unanswered questions. The first is, who is controlling SIVA? Remember that SIVA is a nanomite, and during the first outbreak it was not considered sentient, it is a tool that must be programmed, we programmed it to create great technologies during the Golden age.

A lot of this lore is related to Malahayati and General Chen Lanshu. Rasputin 100% controlled SIVA at one stage and in fact Rasputin was the one to unleash SIVA upon the Iron Lords, then somehow the House of Devils came into possession of SIVA. Aksis, is often thought to be controlling SIVA, however apart from him being the final raid boss, there is actually not much lore supporting this.

Furthermore, Aksis is now dead, yet someone instructed SIVA to resurrect Taniks. Did someone just take the role of Aksis once he died?… well there could be another explanation.

If you remember back to how Rasputin first programmed SIVA, he programmed it as

in my mind, this sounds like a virus, virus’s enter a host organism, they replicate inside that hose, they eliminate other natural cells in the host and they try protect themselves from the host’s immune system. There is no doubt in my mind that SIVA acts like virus, which is why it can sometimes appear alive.

The question is, has SIVA evolved, has SIVA become free thinking and no longer requires someone to control it, or do the devils still remain in control? Let me read you the conclusion of the strike mission again,

“You prevented SIVA from restarting Tanik’s mercenary operation. The Nanites continue to evolve their function. The Guardian will have plenty of opportunity to study SIVA, The devils are far from defeated.”

The Nanites continue to evolve their function! The devils are far from defeated…. That does not necessarily mean that the Devil’s are in control. Whether it is SIVA becoming sentient or another big bad Devil enemy, something is still out there Guardian.

Thank you for watching this latest destiny lore episode, if you would like to support the channel but cannot think of a comment, leave the phrase, Sentience, to speculate that SIVA has evolve. As usual, it has been a pleasure, this is myelin games. Peace
