Does Rasptin control SIVA?

Character Lore

Rasputin and SIVA

SIVA had been lost to time. When Timur tracked it to the Cosmodrome, thought our quest was finally over. SIVA would be ours for the taking. Rasputin responded. More than a hundred Iron Lords entered the Plaguelands. In the end, only nine reached the replication chamber.

Welcome back Guardians. Today we are trying to understand how Rasputin fits into the storyline of Rise of Iron. If you were anything like me, during my first play through, I did not quite understand how Rasputin was involved with SIVA. I hope this video will clarify, or maybe even ask more questions about how Rasputin is involved with SIVA and what we do and do not know about this relationship.

Since the release of Rise of Iron, I have made three other Detiny lore videos, which incldues two episodes on the Owl Sector and an episode on the Identity of Dredgen yor. The links are in the description.

Of course, this video will contain spoilers if you have not completed the campaign missions in Rise of Iron, I suggest you leave now otherwise you will be spoiled. Let’s start with a brief recap of the Rise of Iron campaign. The Vanguard notice that Fallen are digging into golden age research labs across the system and whilst they were not concerned at first, they become increasing concerned as they notice the Fallen shifting resources into the plaugelands, which had been dark for centuries. This catches the attention of Lord Saladin who leaves his post as Iron Banner vendor to begin an investigation. Saladin requests you investigate Vostok Observatory on Felwinter Peak, which lies just outside the Iron Temple.

The area is flooded with Fallen and you encounter Sepiks perfected, which prompts Saladin to believe that the Fallen may have found SIVA and are using it to modify themselves. It is later confirmed that the Fallen used information from a Clovis Bray laboratory on Mars, to find and reactivate the SIVA replication chamber to produce more SIVA and attempt to become machine gods. It is also confirmed in the grimoire cards that Clovis Bray was responsible for the creation of SIVA and also created the SIVA replication chamber.

The campaign requires you to enter the SIVA replication chamber and destroy it. This is the same place were the Iron Lords perished, in the opening cutscene Jolder set off the bomb inside the replication chamber hoping to destroy it, however it was only damaged, allowing the Fallen to reactivate it later on.

As you enter the chamber you are confronted by the remanets of three Iron lords being controlled by SIVA, Felwinter, Jolder and Gheleon. Upon their defeat and initiating the self-destruct sequence, you destroy the replication chamber, return Jolder’s helm to Lord Saladin and you are declared an Iron Lord receiving the exotic sword, young wolf’s howl. Although you have prevented further creation of SIVA, by destroying the chamber, you still must enter the raid, Wrath of the Machine and destroy Aksis, the Archon Prime who is suspected to still be controlling SIVA.

So… what does Rasputin have to do with any of this. Well, we receive some cryptic information about Rasputin during a cut scene, during the in game dialogue and in the new Ghost Fragment: Rasputin 6 grimoire card, which you find by the way just outside the SIVA replication chamber.

During the cut scene Saladin says that the Iron Lords started to look for SIVA following the collapse, hoping it would be there saviour however they encountered a problem, he says this,

“SIVA had been lost to time. When Timur tracked it to the Cosmodrome, thought our quest was finally over. SIVA would be ours for the taking. Rasputin responded. More than a hundred Iron Lords entered the Plaguelands. In the end, only nine reached the replication chamber. But since we were chosen by the Traveler and our cause was just, we were certain the day would be ours. Until SIVA took control. It infected our weapons. Our armor. The corruption puppeted us against one another. In the end, Jolder sealed the chamber with the Iron Lords inside, rather than let SIVA escape. A battle was won. Heroes died. And our mistakes stayed here. But Rasputin survived. This is not Rasputin. But neither is it something I know how to fight.”

It appears that the Iron Lords were trying to access SIVA but Rasputin tried to stop them, i.e. “Rasputin responded”, whilst this is relatively cryptic, it appears that Rasputin did not want the Iron Lords to acquire SIVA, why? Maybe it is because Rasputin was aware of the dangers of SIVA or maybe it was for another reason.

In the final mission, Iron Tomb, we receive some more information about the battle between the Iron Lords and Rasputin. The in-game dialogue says,

“The Iron Lord’s original plan was to destroy the replicator in the SIVA chamber. Jolder’s explosion apparently only damaged it, so when you reach the chamber, you will need to finish what she began. That wont stop the Fallen from using the SIVA they already have. There’s more than one battle in a war. Only a few of us reached the replication complex. The worst of Rasputin’s defences had already blanketed this entire area. Frames, constructs… Some things I haven’t seen before nor since. They felt no pain. No fear. All we’ve seen so far is Fallen. Last time, his presence was almost physical. I think he was trying to communicate, but we did not understand. How can you be so certain Rasputin wont get involved once we’re inside? The Vanguard sill believe Rasputin to be simply a Warmind. He hasn’t been that for a very long time.”

It appears that Rasputin used Frames and constructs to defend the replication chamber from the Iron Lords, killing many of them. I assume that these “frames and constructs” are similar to Exos but as Saladin says, “things I haven’t seen before nor since”, so they must be sightly different. It also seems like Rasputin tried to warn the Iron Lords about the dangers of SIVA but they would not listen, or at least he tried to communicate with them in some way, hence Rasputin had to prevent the Iron lords from reaching the chamber. Obviously, some of the Iron Lords made it through the defences and when they actually encountered SIVA it infecting them and turned them against each other.

The other main area of interest is that Saladin confirms that Rasputin is no longer just a warmind. What exactly does this mean? Well, I believe the answer may lie within the new ghost fragment Rasputin 6.

Ghost Fragment: Rasputin 6 confirms the events I have spoken about, saying that the Iron Lords tried to access SITE 6, which is the location of the SIVA replication chamber. It reads,

“SITE 6 has been breached by unauthorized users with [O] energy. I am invoking PALISADE IMPERATIVE. [O] lifeforms in restricted areas will be suppressed. SIVA use authorized. Self-destructs disengaged. Security codes reset. All defenses activated. Frames activated.”

Remember that I believe that the symbol [O], the square brackets with a circle in it, represents the Traveler and so when it sasy, this symbol “[O] lifeforms” are guardians or in this case Iron Lords.

The card says “SIVA use authorised” this appears to suggest that Rasputin is controlling SIVA. It is also possible, that Rasputin was actually the one to use SIVA to infect the Iron Lords and turn them against each other. The card then says

this is very very similar to the words used in the Dormant SIVA grimoire cards. For example, Dormant SIVA Fallen 3.0 describes the process of the Fallen integrating SIVA into their bodies, it reads

“Long have we wandered in the blind prison of flesh. Those old lives now a memory, transposed by another. The gift brings pain, yes, but godhood must come at a price. ~consume enhance replicate ~”

I do believe that Rasputin has the ability to use and control SIVA, which he did to destroy many of the Iron Lords. I believe this is reinforced by the wrods “SIVA use authorised”, “Replicate, eliminate, immunize” and when Saladin says

“The Vanguard sill believe Rasputin to be simply a Warmind. He hasn’t been that for a very long time.”?

I am aware that Shiro-4 says that Aksis, the Archon Prime is controlling SIVA, so maybe the Fallen did temporarily take control over SIVA or maybe Rasputin no longer controls SIVA??

Regardless, to whether you believe this theory or not, what we cannot deny is that Rasputin has not reactived its protocols to once again defend humanity. The Ghost Fragment Rasputin 6 card reads,

“Query: Re-engage population protection objectives. (N) Query: Reset moral structures. (N) Query: Activate defense subroutine AURORA RETROFLEX. (Y)”

That concludes this latest destiny lore episode, if you would like to support the channel but cannot think of a comment, leave the phrase, “Rasputin Perfected” to acknowledge the speculation that Rasputin is the one who truly controls SIVA.

I hope you have enjoyed this latest destiny lore episode, as usual it has been a pleasure this is myelin games. Peace.
